A curious and enigmatic issue
Lot 319
TROAS. Abydos (?). 4th-3rd century BC. AE (Bronze, 21 mm, 7.39 g, 12 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. Eagle standing left, wings closed. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG München -. SNG von Aulock -. A curious and enigmatic issue. Very fine.

The tentative attribution of this enigmatic piece to Abydos is based on the eagle type, but the coin lacks any ethnic and the obverse is not the typical rendering of Apollo that we find on other coins from this city - rather, it bears similarities to the silver coinage of Lysimachos
